Deep / Surface – Marine Technology from Mäntyluoto

11 April 2026 – 31 October 2027

From the 1970s to the 1990s, Rauma-Repola’s marine engineering expertise ranked among the best in the world. The massive offshore drilling rigs built at the Mäntyluoto works were sent to seas across the globe, and Finnish engineering, combined with hands-on shipyard craftsmanship, brought builders from Pori to the forefront of international marine technology.

The exhibition highlights the people behind these monumental structures: welders, machinists, designers, and engineers whose hands bent steel and whose drawing paper was well worn. Scale models, photographs, videos, and recent interviews reveal the life of the shipyard community and its importance to Finnish industry and identity.

The exhibition is produced in collaboration with the Emil Aaltonen Museum, which simultaneously presents a companion exhibition on Rauma-Repola Oceanics’ MIR submersible project—a story of how Finnish technology became entangled in the Cold War.
